SIDLAK Concert On High Gear

(Toronto—10/01/2012) It’s all systems go for SIDLAK –Concert of Hope which goes on stage on January 21 (7 pm) at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 2565 Bathurst Street, just north of Eglinton Avenue. The concert is part of Operation Tabang, an initiative of Our Lady of the Assumption Church/ARCHDIOCESAN FILIPINO CATHOLIC MISSION (AFCM) aimed at sending assistance to victims of Typhoon Sendong particularly in Northern Mindanao. OLA Pastor and AFCM Director Rev. Fr. Ben Ebcas, Jr. chairs the project with Zeny Uy (AFCM Secretary) acting as convenor of the collaborating community groups.

More familiar names from Toronto’s entertainment industry have joined the bandwagon, like: Ms. Jennifer Camacho, Chyrell Samson, Rodney Ronquillo, Duane Zambas, Jiemil Restituto, and Chinky Esperon. Msgr. Columbus Villamil of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro will be in town and he will be joining Toronto’s own “Singing Priests”, namely, Fr. Ben Ebcas, Fr. Romy Tolentino, Fr. Gig Bandala, Fr. Joel Pabilona, and Fr. Sherwin OIandez.

There will be a mini “battle of the bands” as Manny Bade and the CR02 Band and Ab Noize rock the stage. Also singing with the CR02 Band are Rene Panebo and Marilou Malicdem.

Noted sopranos Lilac Cana and Jennifer Uy will lend a touch of classic Filipino music as they sing popular kundimans and spiritual songs.

As always, it will be a delight to listen to the youthful voices of Jasmine Ragual, Inah Patrizia Canlapan, Belinda Corpuz, and Michael Masangkay. A full complement of OLA’s own young dancers and singers from Singles for Christ will share the stage.

Of course, the famed Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe will not fail to entertain the audience with a sample of its popular folk dances.

Rodney and I were invited by the Canadian Blood Services to perform between 1-4pm.   For more information on this event, please see below.

Registration with OneMatch is the first step for a potential donor who wishes to help any patient in need. Filipinos are under represented in the registry.  At present there are 8 Filipinos that are in need of blood stem cell transplant.   Only 30% of patients will find a match within their family and 70% of Canadians rely on a generous donation from an unrelated person. OneMatch is committed to encouraging Canadians to become stem cell donors. Together, we help patients and their families, find their one match. Although the criteria to join the registry is between the age of 17 and 50, the best outcome for patients are still seen within the age group of 17 and 40 years old.

Currently, over 277,000 donors are on the registry.  We need to increase this number to help find matches for the 890 patients presently waiting for blood stem cells.   The number of transplants for Canadian patients continues to climb so one of the main challenges we face is to improve the awareness of OneMatch Stem Celland Marrow network to build a larger database with a broad ethnic diversity of potential donors, diversifying the number of registrants who are committed to donate  to any patient in need.
