Miss Saigon |
March 27- April 5, 2008
MISS SAIGON - March/April 2008
(part of the 2007/2008 Encore Series)
Lyrics
by: Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr.
Music
by: Claude Michel Schonberg

A classic love story is brought up-to-date in one of the most stunning theatrical spectacles of all time. “Miss Saigon,” brings Puccini's “Madame Butterfly” to the modern world in a moving testament to the human spirit and a scathing indictment of the tragedies of war. In the turmoil of the Vietnam War, an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl fall in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon. Their struggles to find each other over the ensuing years ends in tragedy for her and a fighting chance for the child he never knew he had. An international sensation, “Miss Saigon” is an epic, daring pop opera that is universal in its emotional power even as it deals with controversial, contemporary issues. Its sung-through pop-inflected score gives a multi-ethnic cast of strong pop singers an opportunity to shine, in showstopping numbers like “I Still Believe,” “Why God Why?” and “The American Dream.” Raw and uncompromising, “Miss Saigon” is an intensely personal story of the losses we suffer and the sacrifices we make in a world gone mad.

Broadway Musical which unfolds with intelligence and social
commentary in turn-of-the century New York. Interwoven with
the major historic events of the time, the heart of Ragtime
is the story of three remarkable families: one upper-middle
class, white Protestant, one socialist immigrant Jewish, and
one Harlem Black. Their lives become dramatically intertwined
with one another and with the historical characters and events
of the period.
Ragtime
is a delight - filled with beautiful music, amazing choreography,

---------------------------
About Ragtime,the musical: (from Wikipedia)
The
musical tried out in Toronto and Los Angeles, and opened on
Broadway on January 18, 1998.
It
tells the story of three groups in America, represented by
Coalhouse Walker, a Harlem musician; Mother, the matriarch
of a WASP family in New Rochelle, NY; and Tateh, a Latvian
Jewish immigrant. Historical figures such as Houdini, Evelyn
Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford
White, Harry K. Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma
Goldman also appear. The music includes marches, cakewalks,
gospel and ragtime. The show is mostly sung-through, with
most of the story told through song, with very little spoken
dialogue.
The
show was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 1998, and won for
Best Featured Actress (Audra McDonald), Original Score, Book,
and Orchestrations (William David Brohn).
Despite
its limited run of Broadway, Ragtime is considered by many
musical theater aficionados to be one of the greatest American
musicals ever written.
